Measuring the impact of the Super Bowl and Taylor Swift concert on congestion

Get started
The challenge

Taylor Swift’s concert at Allegiant Stadium caused more traffic jams than the Super Bowl. For event operators and transportation agencies, major events put a huge tax on traffic flow especially when unplanned incidents occur.

Data-based solution

To understand how traffic trends played out and compare the impact against other recent major events at Allegiant, StreetLight used its Traffic Monitor product, equipped with near-real-time speed and traffic activity data. This includes a time-lapse of traffic trends measured by atypical volume, speed, atypical speed, and atypical delay. Understanding these traffic patterns can help event operators study and improve traffic plans for events and construction projects to reduce congestion.

Our customers

See why they chose StreetLight

The data has certainly saved time in GDOT’s ability to respond to requests for lane closures and detours submitted by the [project developer] by eliminating the need for extensive, time-consuming calculations to determine traffic volumes and speeds at various times of day. Time savings also always equate monetary savings.
Marlo Clowers
Design-Build Program Manager at GDOT
Now that we have StreetLight, we can broaden the corridor, look at alternative roadways, intersecting roadways, more details on where transit id, and we can look at the context of the whole corridor, not just little pieces one at a time.
Chuck Imbrogno
Models and Data Analysis Manager
Without StreetLight, calculating the Speed Reduction Factor would have been monumental in terms of MPO staff time and resources.

FAQs

Quick answers to questions you may have

Discover everything about the StreetLight Traffic Monitor features, benefits, and more.

What are traffic monitoring systems?

A traffic monitoring system helps transportation professionals and businesses view traffic trends over time to understand roadway conditions as they change. StreetLight’s Traffic Monitor delivers real-time and historical data on conditions impacting congestion, safety, sustainability, and more.

What types of data do traffic monitoring systems collect?

StreetLight’s Traffic Monitor system collects and displays metrics like vehicle speed, vehicle volumes, and travel time throughout your entire road network. These metrics help you understand traffic patterns impacting congestion, safety, sustainability, and more.

What are traffic monitoring systems used for?

Customers can use the data provided by StreetLight’s Traffic Monitor to understand how current conditions compare to typical historical conditions, deploy rapid-response traffic management solutions, understand where and when issues with congestion or safety repeatedly arise, plan ahead for special events and construction traffic management, and more.

How recent is the data available in the Traffic Monitor?

The Traffic Monitor dashboard includes instant, always-on access to real-time and historical data. This allows practitioners to compare real-time disruptions to typical conditions, including when volumes exceed or fall below normal thresholds. For practitioners working on Active Traffic Management, we offer a continuous speed feed updated in real-time.
